Publisher: Alabeo | Review Author: |
As I mentioned in my past review of the Alabeo Tomahawk, I truly believe that Alabeo provides the most bang for your buck when it comes to payware aircraft and the SU-26 is no exception, as this plane in my opinion rocks! Alabeo released the SU-26 in 2013 and as such it can be flown in either X-Plane 9.7 or X-Plane 10 and is both 32 bit and 64 bit compatible.
The SU-26 is a single seat high powered aerobatic propeller driven aircraft, with a Vedeneyev M-14P radial engine built by the Sukhoi Aircraft Company back in the days of the USSR.
The Alabeo SU-26 can be flown just like any other general aviation aircraft, but with the abilities that the SU-26 provides, who would want to? This decidedly nimble aircraft will let you (if you dare) attempt all kinds of aerobatic maneuvers. Its light frame and 360 hp engine makes snap rolls and inverted flight possible and are just a few of the amazing abilities this aircraft offers to the adventurous pilot.
Alabeo provides a nine page pdf document explaining how to attempt numerous acrobatic maneuvers and also documentation covering joystick and rendering settings. While researching the aircraft I found an interesting article by an aerobatic pilot by the name of Julia Wood. The article was in a copy of Sports Aerobatics and was titled: 'Finessing a Russian Bear'. It's a great read and you can find it here at this link (scroll down).
With the flight characteristics of the SU-26, is it any small wonder that this amazing aircraft has been used in numerous air races and air shows around the world?
As mentioned earlier, Alabeo provides a very helpful guide which aids you in setting up your joystick. Having the right setup means that you can enjoy the aircraft to the fullest. Using the documentation from Alabeo, I did just that and found the SU-26 to be extremely responsive and very fast. At 279.6 mph or 450 kph, it felt like I was in a small jet. As well as being able to fly fast, the SU-26 is also capable of flying slowly, making the aircraft very easy to land. The SU-26 at full aerobatic weight (2650 pounds) and fuel (50 US gallons) will also take off in very short distances (360 feet).
The G-limit of the SU-26 is a staggering +12G's -10G's which is almost enough to make your eyeballs pop out of your head! To experience the G loads of the SU-26, I would definitely fly with your X-Plane's settings set to show High Load (hypoxia). By choosing this setting the screen will gradually turn dark so as to represent the G forces you are creating in your flight. Too much and you'll pass out. Luckily we are in a sim, but it's fun to see how far you can push this bird.
